Coordinate your costumes with this year’s parade theme: Pirates of the Crescent City – Tales of Jean Lafleabag. There are numerous websites that sell pirate costumes for pets of all sizes. For DIY aficionados, I found festive pirate costumes on Instructables at www.instructables.com/id/Pet-Pirate-Costume/. Then pimp a wagon for some Mardi Gras parading action. There are beaucoup ideas for transforming wagons into pirate ships on the internet. Let your imagination and creativity soar! It’s all part of the process.
Now that the float and costumes are underway for you and your Mardi Gras Pet, you need to gather throws. Many paraders solicit throws from family and friends to at to their Mardi Gras collection or Loot. Many Krewes have specialty throws that represent their organization and are sought after by collectors. These throws are highly prized by children of all ages.
Since 1993, the Mystic Krewe of Barkus has lined up at Armstrong Park. At parade start time, the parade begins to wind its way through the French Quarter, attracting crowds as it makes its way to Galatoire’s on world famous Bourbon Street to toast the King and Queen for the day. It then travels the rest of its route back to Armstrong Park. True to New Orleans Mardi Gras style, there are both a pre-parade pawty and a post-parade pawty. There is also a Coronation Ball to be held at the Windsor Court this season. You know it’s not just about the parade! All proceeds from the festivities benefit homeless animal rescue and adoption. Further information and parade registration can be found at www.barkus.org. Happy Mardi Gras!
